Skincare Glossary: Do You Know What These Terms Really Mean?

As natural skincare continues to gain momentum, terms such as natural, organic, vegan and cruelty-free have become increasingly common throughout the beauty industry. Yet these labels are often misunderstood—or used interchangeably as marketing claims.

Have you ever wondered what these terms actually mean, and why certain products are described this way?

The best way to understand what’s inside your skincare products is by reading the ingredient list. At Lonjevite, our formulations are vegan, cruelty-free, and crafted with 100% naturally derived botanical ingredients. Before choosing your next skincare product, let’s take a closer look at what these definitions really mean.

What Are Natural Ingredients?

Natural ingredients are derived exclusively from plants, botanical extracts and naturally occurring minerals. They do not contain synthetic chemicals, artificial colorants, silicones, parabens or petroleum-derived ingredients.

However, it’s always worth looking beyond the front label. The ingredient list is the best way to understand the proportion and quality of naturally derived ingredients within a formulation.

Organic

Although the terms natural and organic are often used interchangeably, they are not the same.

Organic ingredients are naturally derived, but they must also be cultivated and processed according to strict agricultural standards. This means they are grown without synthetic pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or other harmful chemicals throughout every stage of production.

Vegan

Vegan skincare contains no animal-derived ingredients or by-products, including ingredients such as beeswax, collagen, retinol derived from animal sources or animal-derived glycerin.

It’s important to remember that vegan does not automatically mean natural or organic. A vegan product may still contain synthetic ingredients, so reading the full ingredient list remains essential.

Beyond animal welfare, choosing vegan skincare also helps reduce the environmental impact associated with animal-derived ingredients and supports a more sustainable approach to beauty.

For those interested in learning more, PETA provides a comprehensive list of animal-derived cosmetic ingredients. Every skincare choice has an impact—not only on your skin, but also on the environment and the world around us. Whenever possible, choose formulations that respect both nature and all living beings.

Is Every Vegan Product Cruelty-Free?

Cruelty-free means that neither the finished product nor any of its individual ingredients have been tested on animals.

While many cruelty-free products are also vegan, the two terms are not interchangeable. A product may be cruelty-free yet still contain animal-derived ingredients, just as a vegan product is not necessarily cruelty-free unless neither the formula nor its ingredients have been tested on animals.

Understanding the distinction between these terms helps you make more informed choices when selecting skincare that aligns with both your values and your lifestyle.
